Maritime Service Board Found

I specialise in Mitchell Library Missing Book Searches and I have one I want to share with you.

I was approached by a colleague because the Maritime Services Board of New South Wales's Annual reports for 1952/53-1959/60 and 1960/61-1967/68 were missing from the shelf where the other annual reports were kept.

Because these volumes were missing, the State Reference Library copies (see record below) were brought in from Offsite Storage.

Luckily I was able to locate the missing volumes shelved out of place a number of shelves below and they have been returned to their rightful place on the shelf with the others.

So, if you do have time, please look on the other shelves near where the item(s) are shelved so we don't call volumes in from Offsite storage needlessly

RSS feeds

What I like about RSS and newsreaders is it keeps you up to date with the latest information about your favourite topic and thanks to a colleague I now have a blog list to view these feeds in my blog as well as Google reader

Its easy to do and before I knew it I had nine!

I chose library sites, museum sites because they always interest me, science, Sherlock Holmes site of course, Sydney Morning Herald Travel Blog as I am interested in a lot of countries all over the world and ABC News to keep me informed of the news which is happening today. I also selected an Egyptian blog as I am interested in that as well.

For Missing books it would be great to have a blog and then keep everyone up to date as to where to find books, tips, hear other people's views, what's been found and where, ask for help locating a book for starters.

Libraries could use RSS feeds to let their clients know about what is happening in the library week by week and clients could subscribe to these blogs and keep up to date with their library's activities.

"Sutherland Shire Librarie News" was very good and was all about the events happening in this library which would be invaluable for the people living in the area to be aware of.

"ABS Blog for Librarians" is great if you are a Librarian, which I am not, but it still looks good and has information on so many topics which would be valuable if you had a RSS feed to that blog and looking for something on one of those topics discussed.

"Powerhouse Museum - Photo of the day" is my favourite blog as it has photographs of the exhibits and other things and I love collecting pictures so for my its ideal.

It is well set out and easy to use and the photographs are beautiful.

I'm looking forward to receiving more RSS feeds from this blog in the future.

I also like that can share these photographs if you want to which is great as well.

wikis wikis wikis!

Well finding out about wikis was good because before now I had no idea what they were and I knew very little about wikipedias.

However, trying to get into our wiki was a nightmare but there was help on the way with my colleague reconnecting me and on I went!

It was interesting to read people's comments and suggestions and I added a few which might help later on when we use this technology in the future.

Well that's done now and go onto RSS feeds I go!

wikis findings

I have checked all the wikis listed for Week 4 and I like Wookieepedia best as its well set out like a normal wiki but with illustrations and interesting quotes and feature articles.

Mint Museums, North Carolina wiki is good too as it is all about their exhibitions and gives people with knowledge about this exhibitions to add more information to them.

The SJCPL Subject guides wiki was good but only could be edited by librarians and it was good there was a discussion option for people to contact the library with suggestions and the information for all the subjects were clear and easy to understand.

The subject guides would be good for libraries like SJCPL Subject guides.

Wikis giving the terminology for different tasks to explain which the terms used mean.

Putting procedures on the intranet as a wiki for discussion and editing where needed.

Da Vinci Code

Dear all

My colleague has helped me to create hyperlinks and copying from the internet and here they are:

http://library.sl.nsw.gov.au/search/?searchtype=t&searcharg=da+vinci+code&searchscope=2&SORT=D&extended=0&SUBMIT=Search&searchlimits=&searchorigarg=tdavinci+code

The reason I chose the Davinci Code was because this book has gone missing so many times and hopefully it will be on the shelf if you ever want to read it!

Flickr

I like "minerva's musings" as it has great photos and I really like "Librarians the ultimate search engines" which is funny and true.

I also like "rare or underdone" because it looks very professional and the pictures enhance the blog.

Flickr is good fun but I had trouble setting up a Flickr account but it was worth it and I got some really good pictures for Energy and Teamwork, one of our values and Sherlock Holmes of course. Well this blog is booksgonemissing and like Sherlock Holmes I go in search of missing books and I am on the case even as we speak!

I was impressed with the photos in Flickr taken by State Library staff. Its amazing how the Mitchell Library looks at different angles and my favourites are the ones of the Matthew Flinders statue and they came out better than when I tried to take a photo of him a couple of years ago!

It must take a lot of team work to all skip over the rope all at once and it must use up a lot of energy to keep it going!

This is true of the State Library where we require teamwork to get the job done in whatever division and done with the energy so it is done efficiently and enthusiastically!
